The Unintended Price of Drinking Milk in Adulthood

Acne might feel like an unavoidable rite of passage for teenagers, but evolutionary science suggests it is actually a modern Western phenomenon. Historical studies of isolated, non-Western populations—such as the Kitavan islanders of Papua New Guinea and the Aché hunter-gatherers of Paraguay—revealed a striking fact: acne was virtually non-existent among them.

Researchers quickly noticed a key difference in their diets compared to typical Western households, namely the total absence of cow’s milk and processed dairy products.

To understand why milk seems to trigger skin breakouts, scientists look to biology. Over millions of years of evolution, mammalian milk was designed for a very specific purpose: to promote rapid growth in newborns during their earliest stages of life. Milk is not merely a source of liquid nutrition, but a complex biological signalling fluid packed with hormones and growth factors. Prominent researchers, including Professor Bodo Melnik, have explained that drinking milk as teenagers or adults effectively turns on an evolutionary growth system long after human body development needs it. This continuous genetic signal stimulates cellular growth, increases body weight, and causes skin glands to overproduce oil, leading directly to blocked pores and persistent acne.

While severe acne is a frustrating skin condition, scientists argue that the chronic overstimulation of this growth mechanism might carry wider health risks. The same signalling pathways triggered by regular dairy consumption—specifically a protein complex called mTORC1—are also linked to modern metabolic health problems, including obesity, type two diabetes, and cardiovascular concerns.

Fortunately, researchers emphasise that simple lifestyle changes can make a massive difference. Reducing milk protein intake, particularly whey-heavy low-fat milk and sports supplements, helps turn down these exaggerated growth signals, offering a natural way to clear skin and lower long-term health risks.
